Certificate of Awesomeness

Last night, I was going through a pile of papers that had accumulated on my kitchen counter, when I came across this little gem. One day back in June, while I was at work at the book store, these two young girls approached me and handed me this "certificate" along with a lollipop. I was a little caught off guard, but then when I read what the piece of paper said, my heart swelled a little bit. Here were two young girls, going around handing out these pieces of paper to complete strangers all to promote reading*! I wanted to hug them, but I'm not a hugger, so I did the next best thing and engaged them in conversation and asked them what they were currently reading. I just couldn't get over how sweet and innocent the whole thing was.

Unfortunately, I didn't think to ask them their names, or if they had website or some way for other people to get involved - like a "pass-it-on" type thing. But I like to think they are still out there, handing out Certificates of Awesomeness to unsuspecting readers. (Even though us readers don't need any more convincing to be reading...but still.) The thought and effort is beautiful.

Little moments like this remind me that people are still reading and books will stick around for a long time.

*Obviously I wasn't reading while I was at work, but they said that because I worked in a book store, it pretty much counted as the same thing. So I am still awesome.

    1. Me too, lol! They should add a "tag, you're it" to it where you then have to go and hand out however many to the next few people you see reading! I'm so glad I kept it - it makes my heart smile every time I look at it :)

  4. This is the best thing ever! I always see people reading in public and want to go ask what they're reading. I always shy away from the idea though. Some people are on their eReaders and that can hold plenty of strange!

    Thanks for sharing!

    1. I love when I'm reading in public and it encourages someone to approach me and talk about what I'm reading (seems to happen mostly in airports/on airplanes, but still...). I feel the e-reader is ruining this for readers :(

    2. I always try to talk to people about books to read ... but, yes, its nice when you can SEE what the person is reading. I don't need to ask the eReader person only to hear it's something uncomfortable.

  5. Brie,
That is just too awesome. Really!

I remember the looks I got when I participated in world book night.. maybe I should get my niece to assist so people don't look at me so strangely!

    1. Haha, that's right - I remember reading about your world book night! I don't know if I'd be brave or outgoing enough to do something like that - but I think it's awesome that you did it! I hope I run into these girls again one day... :)

  6. *gasp* You work (or worked?) at a bookstore too! I think that, deep down, we must be long lost twins or something ;-) I totally used to read at work though, but on quiet Sunday nights when the story was pretty much empty and I was a warm body at the back desk.

    1. You work at a bookstore?! (Or did?) We were meant to find each other, Melissa! ;) I read more at my nursing job than bookstore job, to be honest! Lol.
