New York May 2015

So this is happening in, oh, ten days! That's right, in ten days I'm getting on a plane with my best friend and we are flying to New York! No babies, no husbands. I don't think the reality of this has truly set in yet.

New York 2015

A few months ago, when I caught wind of the Rocky Mountain Soap Women's Run in Canmore, I asked my best friend Karen if she thought there would be any way she could sneak away for the weekend with her youngest baby and join me and Sully for the stroller run. She responded with "I have a better idea". A better idea than a night or two away in beautiful Canmore?! I really had no idea what she was going to come up with. New York in May. That was her better idea. She wins.

My heart sped up when I heard her say the words. New York City?! She must be crazy, I thought. Here we were, sitting on her couch breastfeeding our two babies (Karen has three kids by the way), and she's proposing we go to New York in May?! I think these thoughts of doubt crossed my mind for all of five seconds before I said "OK!"

And now, in a little over a week, a life-long dream of mine is going to come true! Seeing NYC has always been on my bucket list, but, like many things on said list, it hasn't been crossed off yet. And getting to go with my best friend is a once in a life time opportunity. Especially when you're at this stage of our lives, where you have a husband, and kids, and dogs, and a whole slew of responsibilities. it's not easy to go away with a friend. Especially not for a whole week.

Luckily, we both have awesome husbands and amazing family who didn't hesitate at all to make this trip a reality for us. Don't get me wrong, it will be super hard for me to leave Sully, but I know, without a doubt that he will be fine without me and in the best of hands. My mom will be moving in to help look after him and I'm also flying my sister out to help babysit. She hasn't seen Sully since September and I'm so, so excited for her to get a whole week with him to bond. They are going to have so much fun together! (And I'm secretly hoping that after she spends a whole week with Sully, she'll want to move back to Alberta to be closer :))

So! New York! Someone pinch me.

But, because Karen and I are both so busy, we haven't had any time to sit down and plan what we want to do or what we want to see when we are in New York yet. And so I bring this to all of you reading this: if you've been to New York, what are a few things/places/sights we have to see? And if you haven't been to New York, what's something you would definitely do if you went?

  1. HOW exciting!!! My top things to do/see: Go to the Starlight Dinner at Times Square, so fun! Broadway shows for sure. We did a bus tour thing the first day to get a lay of everything which I liked, the bought a punch pass to see different things (bus was part of this) and it saved us money for sure. Going to the Top of the Rock at night was pretty cool and there was no line ups vs Empire State. I love Kelly and Michael so we went to that and the Late night show, both were fun but only if you like the shows probably. The subway was cheap and easy transportation as well :)

    1. We already got tickets for Book of Mormon (on my birthday!!) and will probably try to see one more while we are there. Is the punch pass you bought The New York pass that costs like $200?? I'm on the fence for that one. And we apparently have tickets for The View, we just have to find out how early we have to get in line to make sure we get a seat!

  2. So awesome! I'm jealous. I went to NYC 8 years ago and would love to go back. As Lindsey said, the Starlight Dinner is a MUST. It's seriously so awesome, I went twice. I saw Phantom of the Opera and The Lion King on Broadway. The Lion King made me cry. Both productions were amazing. Can't wait to hear all about the trip!

    1. We've got Starlight Dinner on our list now! That's good to know about Lion King - I want to see it, but wasn't sure! Karen's brother got us tickets to Book of Mormon (on my birthday too!) and we'll try and get cheap tickets to one other show while we are there :)

  3. YAY New York! I'm actually from there (ok, born and raised in California, then NY, then Boston, but my parents still live in NY) Check out Groupon for restaurants/tours- they have SO MANY for any borough of the city. I'd recommend any show you can score tickets to..it's just a fun experience.

    1. Groupon! Fantastic tip - never would have occurred to me to look at that. We have tickets for Book of Mormon already, and will probably try and see one other show. We will be staying right in the Chelsea district and I just found out, across from a Trader Joe's, and I'm so excited about that! Haha!

  4. YAY NYC! If you're looking for free things I loooooooooove Central Park. If you like Mad Men, the museum of moving images in Queens has an exhibit on the show including costumes, sets, production notes that was pretty nifty. Also a bunch of the museums (like the Natural History Museum) are free and they ask for a donation that you technically don't have to pay or you can pay whatever you want. If you want to go to a Broadway show, you could wait in the TKS lines for discount tickets. You won't get any of the SUUUPER popular shows, but there tend to be very good ones. I could totally go on (and on) but I'll stop now.

    1. Definitely Central Park! We will be staying right in the Chelsea district which I know is a subway ride away from the park, but we will definitely be checking it out. And maybe do a bike tour through it? I've only watched one episode of Mad Men (just started it!)! We already have tickets for Book of Mormon, but will definitely try to get cheap tickets to another show - I don't even care which one it is! And please, go on! :)

  5. So much fun that you girls are doing this! I've been once but we didn't do a tonne as we were visiting family. I'd say see if you can get tickets to a taping of a show!

    1. You have family in New York?! That's so awesome! We apparently have tickets to The View, but we still have to show up early to insure we get a seat. I'd really like to see Jimmy Fallon, but we aren't sure how lucky we'll be in that respect. And we have tickets already to Book of Mormon, which I'm really excited about!

  8. I'm so excited for you! You should go to Central Park, "The Met" (Metropolitan Museum of Art), the Guggenheim Museum, New York Public Library (it's beautiful and you have to do SOMETHING bookish!), Rockefeller Center (if you're an NBC/30-Rock fan), Statue of Liberty, visit iconic architecture (Empire/ Chrysler/ Flatiron buildings). If you have extra time, check out the Little Tokyo/Japantown part of the East Village for some great ramen, udon, and sushi!
